Atsumi & Sakai is a multi-lingual and multi-cultural firm which values close co-operation and collaboration among its Japanese bengoshi and foreign lawyers. We have foreign partners with significant international experience, supported by a team of other foreign attorneys. With additional support from bilingual paralegals and other staff, these experienced foreign partners and attorneys enable the firm to provide sophisticated drafting, research and advice to both foreign and Japanese clients and give us a strong platform for working successfully on international transactions.

This is a need we take seriously. We encourage our attorneys, paralegals and staff to expand both their legal and business knowledge and skills, and strongly believe that by doing so we are able to provide the best possible innovative legal and practical solutions for our clients. Our attorneys also regularly provide pro-bono legal services, lecture at universities, host seminars and offer comments on pending legislation to provide the benefits of our knowledge to society. Out of approximately one hundred fourty attorneys at Atsumi & Sakai (including both Japanese and non-Japanese attorneys) approximately thirty percent are women, seventeen of whom are partners, who comprise a quarter of all partners at the firm. Moreover, more than one third of our managing committee is female.

One reason for the number of successful women at Atsumi & Sakai is perhaps our workplace culture, one in which young associates and senior partners alike are encouraged to contribute, irrespective of gender. This, of course, means also having systems in place to support female attorneys and staff before, during, and after childbirth, so that they can work secure in the knowledge that such support will be available to them as a matter of course if and when they should need it. Our firm also has implemented a sexual harassment policy which is neutral as to gender making our law firm an equal opportunity workplace.

The firm's efforts in this respect have been recognized by the “Family Friendly Award,” issued to the Firm by the Daini Tokyo Bar Association in 2015 and "Asia Women in Business Law Awards 2011 - Best Firm in Japan" issued by Euromoney Legal Media Group. We were also recognized as the Asian Legal Business “Employer of Choice (one of the Asia’s best law firms to work for)” eight times in the ten years since ALB began this survey (2011-2018), more than any other law firm in Japan. Moreover, at the ALB Japan Law Awards 2017, Setsuko Yufu, Partner, won the first “Woman Lawyer of the Year” award, which was a newly established category in that year.
